Job 1 and 2

Humanity- I think these two chapters start to give us the idea of karma in humans.  When all the bad things happen to Job, his wife tells him to curse God and die.  This shows the idea of Theodicy, or Karma, because  she wants him to curse God in return for what God did to him.

God- I think the first two chapters show us that God lets bad things happen to good people.  He doesn’t make the bad things happen just because the person did something wrong, he can make bad things happen at any time.  It is also shown that God is trying to prove himself to the devil when he offers Job to him.

Relationships- The main relationship focused on during these two chapters is the one between God and the devil.  It seemed like a very competitive relationship.  We learned that God and the devil go back and forth trying to prove themselves to each other.  It is almost like God says, “yeah look at that Job, he is great.”  Then the devil says, “I bet I can make him curse you.”  God says, “Go ahead and try.”  The devil says, “Fine I will!”  It seems as if they are like regular people trying to out do each other.

Family- These two chapters show us that Job and the rest of his family do not have the same views on what they should be doing.  First off, his kids have parties everynight, and then Job goes and makes sacrafices for them.  They are ok with what they are doing, and it never says that they feel any regret for what they did.  Job on the other hand, knows that they sinned and makes the sacrafices for them.  Then there is Job and his wife.  They have complete different views on what is happening to Job.  After Job loses all of his possesions, his wife tells him to curse God and die, but he then says back to her that she is talking like a foolish woman and that she is completely wrong.

Homework for April 12

     I believe that many people mindlessly follow the school system.  We are taught to memorize and repeat over and over again.  We very rarely search through different ideas and try to fully understand the subject that we are studying, but instead we just read through the textbooks and try to memorize what it says.  Few teachers care if the students know why things happen, and few teachers want the students to debate what things say in the textbooks, they just want us to memorize and agree with what is said because it is in a textbook.  I think that this is the exact reason so many kids dislike school.  No one wants to come to school, memorize a formula, repeat it back to the teacher, take a test, and then go home feeling like they had another pointless day at school.  We need to start understanding what we are learning instead of just remembering something to pass a test.  Knowledge should not be used only to pass a test.  Everyone needs to start being able to think for themselves and not just agree with something because it is in a textbook, or because a teacher said it.

Thoughts on the trial.

I think the trial was a good learning experience.  It got us to think more about the books we read.  Instead of reading for the story, we had to read for a purpose.  It was the first time I actually read a book and found the inner meanings of it by myself.  It was also good because we didn’t have to do work everyday.  We would work hard on the days that we had to give a debate or be a witness, but then we were able to sit back and watch other people do their work on the rest of the days.

One thing I did not like about the trial, was the stress it put on everybody.  Many people were freaking out about it, and it caused some to fail in other classes.  Also, some poeple got mad at others over the trial.

In the end it was a good experience and im glad we did it. 

homework for feb 15

A way that Tom and Mayella are alike is that they both have no chances to do what they want to do. Mayella, although she is white, has to do all the work for the family, and then is beaten by her father. The only person that helps her is Tom. Tom, being black, had to do other people’s work instead of doing what he wanted to do. I believe he felt obligated to do the Ewell’s work because they were a white family. So they both had to do other people’s work without any oppurtunities to do what they wanted to do.

The main difference between Tom and Mayella is that Tom is black and Mayella is white. Even though Mayella didn’t have much oppurtunity in her family, the jury let the white woman win the case over the black man. If they had both been either white or black, Tom would have easily won.

My opinion on the situation is that they are more different than alike simply because of their races. Even if Mayella couldn’t do what she wanted to do inside her family, she still has the chance to win a case over a black man without evidence. Tom has no chance to win a case over a white person because he is black.

homework for feb. 8

     I do not think there is any flaw in this part of the book.  Scout is an eight year old girl.  She is still young and innocent.  When she went over to the mob, she knew her dad was there, and she recognized Mr. Cunningham.  She was unaware that there were any people in the group that weren’t in the group that had visited earlier, and Atticus had said the group that had visited earlier was not a mob.  She had no reason to believe that anything was wrong, she was just a little girl going to see her dad.

     It is proven that she is still innocent earlier in the book when she asks her Atticus about rape.  I believe that this part was porpusely put in the book to help the mob scene make more sense.  When she asks Atticus about rape he says that it is carnal knowlege of a female by force and without consent.  This answer is perfect because it answers the question truthfully but doesnt fully explain it to her, this helps to save her innocence.  Later on when the mob scene comes, we are aware that she is still an innocent little girl because of the previous experience.

     This whole scene is also very helpful in supporting the point of view theme.  Scout’s innocence saved Aticus and Tom Robinson because the mobsters saw things from a different point of view.  They started to think about what it would be like to kill him and leave this little innocent girl helpless and fatherless.  They came in excited to do what they wanted to do, get to Tom Robinson, but they left ashamed of themselves because of Scout’s innocence.

Mockingbirds are important in the story because they help with the point of view theme.  Some people will shoot at them and not even think about it, but when you think of it in a different perspective you realize that they don’t do anything wrong so you have no right to shoot at them.  That is also why it is a sin to kill them, because they don’t do anything wrong.  In the incident between Scout and Uncle Jack, Jack whips Scout without even hearing her side of the story.   This also helps the point of view theme because he learned that he needs to think about what happened through both of the kids eyes before giving out punishment.

Chapters 1-6

The kids seem to grow up just like any other kid, they go to school, get in trouble, and they start to grow apart from each other.  By the end of the summer, Scout seemed to have a very different opinion on things from Dill and Jem.  Scout never wanted to get involved with Boo Radley in the first place, but they convinced her and I think they will learn a lot from him.  I believe that they will finally communicate with him and they will start to learn that he isn’t such a bad person.  The point of view theme will come in more once  they learn more about him.  They will realize that they need to think of things from different pointsof views to understand what happened in a situation.

To Kill A Mockingbird

From reading the back of the book, and some reviews, I think the main theme is going to be about racism.  It will most likely be about a black kid and a white kid becoming friends in a very racist town.  They won’t be friends at first because of their racist friends and family, but then they will get to know each other and learn how stupid racism is.

what can we use blogs for in english.

We can do our homework through blogs so we don’t loose the papers.  You could post questions or writing topics on your site and then we can go and anwer them through personal messages.
